Earning Attention and Trust In Events

In a world where information is everywhere, and time feels limited, attendance at events cannot be taken for granted.

People are more selective about where they go, how they spend their time and what they expect in return. They will travel to connect and for experiences they can’t get online.

Trust matters too. As AI-generated content and misinformation become more common, live events give people the opportunity to hear from credible experts and engage with ideas in person. They can ask questions and have open conversations, creating opportunities to build trust.

What leading organizations are doing differently

Organizations that are succeeding in earning attention and building trust are rethinking how events are designed and delivered.

They are:

  • Reducing packed agendas and creating more space for interaction
  • Using participatory formats that encourage discussion
  • Designing events around outcomes, not content volume
  • Making events accessible and inclusive
  • Keeping people engaged beyond the event itself
  • Using live feedback to adapt in real time

These approaches give attendees a more active role in the experience and more reason to stay engaged.

The attention grab

Attendees need to understand what they will gain, what they will contribute and what they will be able to do differently after attending an event. If that is unclear, attention is lost before the story even begins.

That value needs to be clear before the invitation is sent and reinforced throughout attendee communications. Live events can offer experiences that are difficult to recreate online. Attendees can question ideas, hear directly from experts and learn through conversations with others in the room. Yet time is a precious commodity. It is one of the most valuable things attendees bring to an event and so the event experience must go beyond delivering information alone.

It must offer:

  • Quality content
  • Credible speakers
  • Strong facilitation
  • Participant interaction
  • Time for informal conversations

At BCD M&E, we design events around clear attendee outcomes, with opportunities to participate and interact throughout the experience.

When attendees can see the value of being there and feel their time has been well spent, they are more likely to stay engaged and take something useful away.
