Top Destinations For A ‘Greener’ Incentive

More than ever, sustainability is becoming a leading requirement of our clients’ incentive checklists. Whether it’s foregoing flying, giving back to the environment as part of a programme, reducing food waste, or simply eliminating the need for transport in their itinerary, making incentives greener is an area we’re passionate about at The Collective.

Here is a snapshot of destinations that lend themselves beautifully to a greener incentive.

Bergen, Norway

Go for… Sustainable dining experiences and exceptional views

A famed gateway for jaw-dropping fjords, offering an extensive history to explore. Bergen is an unforgettable base for groups to explore the iconic Norwegian fjords. Sustainability has been embedded in their culture for generations.

With 9 out of 10 hotels in Bergen holding a sustainable certificate, including the luxury Opus VXI Hotel, incentive groups have plenty of choice for greener accommodation. Bergen is also an excellent destination for foodie groups.

As a UNESCO designated City of Gastronomy, most restaurants focus on the principle, from fjord to table. By day guests can canoe and hike the fjords, forage for ingredients for their lunch, or discover the home-grown gins.

Perfect for: A May to September incentive • Outdoorsy and adventurous groups

Azores, Portugal

Go for… An unparalleled paradise for adventure seekers

The Azores is the first archipelago in the world to be certified as a sustainable tourism destination.

Committed to becoming more eco-friendly every day, this Portuguese cluster of islands aims to keep low levels of development and a continued focus on sustainable initiatives. Made up of nine different islands that capture all terrains, from white sandy beaches to wildlife havens to natural pools and volcanic rocks, there’s something here for all types of incentive group.

Perfect for: • A June to October incentive • High energy, adventurous groups • Sea seekers

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Go for… historic charm blended with vibrant creativity

Amsterdam repeatedly tops sustainability lists and there’s no surprise why.

Operating a greener transport system, an excellent bike network, eco hotels and smart urban design, Amsterdam has empowered citizens to co-create a more sustainable city of the future. Ideal for incentives not only because of flight-free links to London by Eurostar, but also for its options aplenty of luxury hotels, group experiences and exceptional restaurants, there’s never been as apt a time to visit Amsterdam as right now.

Perfect for: • A year-round destination, but March – May is prime tulip season • Art lovers

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Go for… A compact, culturally rich city

Not only does Ljubljana come with excellent sustainability credentials, it’s also touted as one of the friendliest cities and hottest food destinations in Europe.

Part of the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism since 2015, Ljubljana was the first EU capital to announce a zero waste plan – with a focus also on green mobility, waste management and sustainable urban planning. Food is the focus in this city, with many of the nation’s emerging chefs championing sustainable farming and local artisan producers.

Perfect for… Between April and May, or September and October • Budget-conscious groups, due to the city’s affordability • Food connoisseurs

Newquay, Cornwall

Go for… Pockets of culture and eco-based activities

For years Cornwall has taken sustainable and responsible tourism seriously. Newquay’s local authorities are always looking at how they can protect the environment amongst the influx of summer visitors. Stay at the stylish beachside Watergate Bay Hotel in Newquay, a property with their own conservation efforts, using 100% renewable electricity and boasting a restaurant with a 10-point sustainability promise, which includes working with local and B-Corp suppliers. Greener efforts can extend to your programme, whether it’s a surf school on the beach, or a private tour of botanical eco-landmark Eden Project. Coastline cycles, sunrise beach yoga, and seafood cooking schools will have groups feeling blissful – all without stepping on a plane.

Perfect for: • A May to June incentive • Accessing by rail
